REPORTS

Justin Pereira M, November 2 2023

Watch now with XTRA+FUBO

Did you miss the CONMEBOL qualifier matches during the international break? Tired of unreliable  streaming services? Find out more about this broadcast issue and how CONMEBOL Reports will make it easier to watch your favourite matches.

After the Qatar 2022 World Cup it seems like football culture hasn't grown as much as we expected.  Considering all three North American teams of CONCACAF qualified, and then the announcement of the 2026 Canada, USA, and México tri host tournament, it seems like the football fans of North America can't access international matches on any reliable or affordable platforms due to the lack of popularity. Our CONMEBOL Reports users even find themselves needing to torrent South American qualifying matches with terrible quality and typically in a different language.

Broadcasting and Football Culture in the USA

In the United States, football has been competing to grow as one of the major sports with a thriving fan base, youth development programs, and a competitive professional league, Major League Soccer (MLS).

Football has gained substantial ground in the United States, thanks to the efforts of organizations like U.S. Soccer and the success of the U.S. Men's and Women's National Teams in international competitions such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics. With a large population of athletes, sports and recreation thrives more in the USA compared to its counterpart up north Canada. USA's proximity to México and being the home to many immigrants and athletes of Latin American decent allows the sport to be well received and popular, especially in the major cities with MLS representation. The USA has made substantial investments in football infrastructure, with large capacity stadiums, training facilities, and international youth development programs. Major League Soccer (MLS) has expanded its reach and now boasts a robust ecosystem for the sport, since the recent purchase of Balon D'or winner Lionel Messic from Inter Miami F.C. The demand for football broadcasting has increased significantly, stadiums pack up for MLS tournaments and league matches, and the interest from brands to partner has made the USA a major investor in the sport. Although the culture from the majority of the population prefers American football from the NFL, the representation USA provides for CONCACAF makes impacts in the football world.

The advantage for American fans is that USA American broadcasting platforms hold the rights to many major sporting tournaments internationally which includes football. These matches need to be displayed for frequently and better marketed to their public, as many American athletes participate in the likes of tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. A few examples of these big channels and broadcasters include:

Broadcasting and Football Culture in Canada

In Canada, the primary broadcaster for football is TSN, which covers a wide range of football events, including MLS matches, international competitions, and more. These channels do not play a variety of matches and the programmings are very rare. The priority is to broadcast hockey per government media regulations, but this does not mean that an increase for football broadcasting shouldn't be done.

Recently, Canada counts with the qualification for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, topping the CONCACAF hexagonal. A strong showing in the Gold Cup in July demonstrated the potential of the Canadian team. Additionally, the women's national team won Olympic gold in Tokyo, drawing a massive audience of 4.4 million viewers for the final. It is clear that football is gaining traction in Canada and the talent being produced is remarkable but unlike the USA, Canada is not investing in the sport.

With the Canadian Premier League being introduced way later then it should have, we can see that many Canadian fans aren't trying to watch matches as they are still not shown often on many channels or are overrided by other Canadian programmings.
